WHEN ONE MENTIONS BICOL, the first thing that comes to mind is the perfect cone shape of Mayon Volcano. But aside from Mayon, the region is also well-known for its beautiful islands and beaches. Though Palawan and Boracay are the top beach island not only in the Philippines but also in the whole world, Bicol has a lot to offer when it comes to white shorelines and pristine turquoise waters.
Even if it’s rainy season, you can still enjoy beach island vacations under the pouring rain. Here is the list of what we think as the top three best beach islands in Region V you may wanna visit:
1. Caramoan Peninsula
It’s not surprising that Caramoan Peninsula got included in the list. Located at the lower and eastern part of Camarines Sur, the whole world knows about it when it was used as location for the American TV reality show Survivor. Also known as Caramoan Islands, there are actually 12 islands namely Lahuy, Matukad, Pitogo, Sabitang Laya, Minalahos, Lahus, Hunongan, Gota, Tinago, Catanhawan, Cotivas and Tayak. The Caramoan peninsula alone is enough to satisfy your thirst for that tranquility and awesome beauty only a beach island can provide. Each of the 12 islands has its own beauty to boast of.
Who wouldn’t love the small town feel of this beach island? No one will surely get tired of waking up every morning if this is the view in the window.
In photo is one of the stunning limestone formations in the island of Sabitang Laya. Matukad, Gota and Sabitang Laya are undeniably gorgeous islands. Just imagine what’s in store for you if you also visit the rest of the peninsula’s islands.
2. Calaguas Islands
Located in Camarines Norte, Calaguas is a group of islands that includes Guintinua, Tinaga and Maculabo. It also gifted with long white shoreline and grassy hills that is perfect for that relaxed beach bumming experience. To go to Calaguas, you can do it yourself or choose from one of the many travel tours that offer tourists with different types of travel package. For example, there is a travel tour that offers an overnight package for P12,000.00. It includes accommodation, boat fee and back-and-forth air fare.
Island hopping is one of the activities you can enjoy in Calaguas. Again, you can avail of the many offered tour packages or do it on your own. You can hire a boat from the locals and have a great solitary moment while feasting your eyes on the scenic views of the beach islands.
3. Catanduanes Island
Catanduanes is also the name of the province, which is a big island located in the east of Camarines Sur. Catanduanes Island has grassy hills that offer a breathtaking view of the sea. It is also home to big waves, which is what surfers are looking for. One of the beaches that is increasingly gaining popularity is Puraran Beach.
In recent years, surfing competitions were held in Catanduanes for obvious reasons. This has resulted to the establishment of surfing camps in the island. Filipino and foreign surfers now include the island in their list of best surfing spots.
After long hours of playing with the waves, a great way to regain energy is to spoil yourself with fresh seafood, refreshing young coconut water, and local delicacies. Those large and juicy lobsters are just a treat to your taste buds.
As it seems, Bicol has a long list of gorgeous and unexploited island beaches. It doesn’t just offer individual beaches but several groups of island beaches that await your visit. Is this list enough to make Bicol your next destination?
